The best times to fish from the beaches are early morning and late afternoon, one hour before high tide to one hour after high tide. Equipment can be hired at local fishing tackle shops at a very reasonable rate.
Bait is available on the beach in the form of 'Pippies' (rather like clams) can be found buried in the sand, if you look closely for the little bubbles. Other baits can be purchased at tackle shops and at most motor garages.
Rock fishing is an option at the Cape Byron Headland and at the south end of Broken Head beach. Be very careful rock fishing. Large waves can surprise you and be very dangerous. Always let someone know that you intend to go rock fishing and to let them know the intended time of your return.
In keeping with the State Law, a fishing permit is required. These are available at local fishing tackle shops.
